CIAS Golf Outing

The horn sounded at 10 a.m. on Friday morning at Shadow Pines Golf Course in Penfield and signaled the tee off for the third annual golf tournament hosted by the College of Computer Imaging Arts and Science (CIAS).

The president of CIAS was pleased with the weather and her decision to host at the beautiful course in Penfield. Golf carts filled with alumni, parents, staff, students and faculty raced off to their designated starting holes on the course, excited to see how the golf course would play throughout the day.

Each golfer was in a party of four. After teeing off, the captain of the group would decide which ball he or she felt was the best shot. Then each player would relocate their ball to that location and continue with their second shot, repeating this cycle until the final putt into the hole. Therefore, the scores were taken as a team, not the individuals. This allowed for more interaction between players and kept the tournament friendly. Certain holes offered a challenge for longest drive and first shot closest to the hole. There were monstrous drives and precision shots ranging from 9 to 12 inches away from the pin.

Beautiful weather and surroundings contributed to the fun-filled atmosphere on the course, especially on the greens. Many players were bragging about putts made from 10 feet or more away. The enjoyment continued after the complete 18-hole game with a raffle for iPods and RIT merchandise. Beer, food and gifts filled the tables for participants of the tournament.

Besides having a wonderful time, everyone enjoyed the golf course and couldn’t stop mentioning the scenery. “We get people coming in and asking if they can rent a golf cart just to drive around the course to really take in the natural beauty our golf course has to offer,” said Jim Ditzel, the course’s general manager.

The CIAS plans to continue their golf tournament tradition in the upcoming years at Shadow Pines Golf Course.
