RIT's Green Cleaning Evolution

The goal for RIT's Facilities Management Services (FMS) is to design, construct, and maintain an efficient and cost-effective working environment. They want to be able to take care of the campus without compromising the health of the students and faculty. Another goal of FMS is to lower the environmental footprint on campus to provide a better earth for future generations.

RIT's Facilities Management Services has switched to using "Environmentally Preferable" products. They want to try and make the campus look cleaner, but do not want to use powerful chemicals that would be hazardous to the environment. These new products have a lesser effect on human health and the environment than traditional products that were previously used. FMS purchases their products through a local Rochester company in order to save money by not having to pay to transport heavy liquids. By supporting local businesses, FMS can cut down on shipping costs, which in the long run will also have a better effect on the environment.

Facilities Management Services have also acquired new floor cleaning machines that are designed to be more ergonomically efficient for the employees using them. They no longer are expected to push around the weight of the machine, but instead the new machines now have they ability for the user to ride on it.

These represent just some of the many steps being taken to make RIT a more environmentally friendly campus. Careful observation while touring the campus will reveal just how many more ways FMS is trying to improve the RIT environment.
